⏰ Free Hours Calculator
Calculate the exact number of hours and minutes between two times. Perfect for work hours tracking, timesheets, and project planning.
What is this tool?
Our free hours calculator computes the exact duration between two times, making it ideal for tracking work hours, filling out timesheets, planning projects, or calculating billable hours. Simply enter your start and end time, optionally subtract a break period, and get the total hours and minutes instantly. Unlike spreadsheet-based solutions that struggle with time arithmetic, this tool handles complex scenarios like overnight shifts (where end time is earlier than start time, indicating the next day) and automatically accounts for break deductions. Whether you are an hourly employee, freelancer, manager, or student tracking study time, this time duration calculator gives you accurate results in seconds.
How it works
The work hours calculator converts both start and end times to total minutes past midnight, then computes the difference:
Overnight Handling
If the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g., 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the tool automatically adds 24 hours (1,440 minutes) to account for crossing midnight. This makes the hours calculator suitable for night shifts and overnight work tracking.
Break Deduction
Enter your break duration in minutes (e.g., 30 for a 30-minute lunch). The tool subtracts this from the total duration, giving you net working hours. If the break exceeds the total duration, the result is capped at zero.
How to use
- Enter Start Time — Select or type the starting time using the time picker (HH:MM format, 24-hour).
- Enter End Time — Select or type the ending time.
- Add Break (optional) — Enter the break duration in minutes. Leave at 0 if no break is needed.
- Click Calculate — The tool displays total hours, total minutes, and a detailed breakdown of the calculation including the time format in both 12-hour and 24-hour systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes, this hours calculator automatically detects overnight shifts. If your end time is earlier than your start time, the tool adds 24 hours to accurately calculate the duration. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM correctly returns 8 hours.
Can I use this for payroll?
This tool provides accurate hour calculations that can be used as a reference for timesheets and payroll. However, always verify your company's specific rounding and overtime policies. For precise payroll calculations, consult your HR department or payroll software.
What time format should I use?
The time picker uses the 24-hour format (HH:MM). 9:00 AM is 09:00, 5:00 PM is 17:00, and midnight is 00:00. The tool displays results in both 12-hour and 24-hour formats for your convenience.
Tips & Advice
For accurate time tracking, record your start and end times at the moment you begin and finish work rather than relying on memory at the end of the day. If you take multiple short breaks during the day, it is easier to enter one total break duration rather than calculating each segment separately. Many employers require a minimum 30-minute unpaid lunch break for shifts exceeding 6 hours — check your local labor laws and company policy.
